Types of Fibers

Let’s talk about fibers. Different fibers have different strengths. Which one fits you best?

Nylon:  It always bounces back no matter how hard you are on it. It maintains its color and does not fade. It is easy to clean and doesn’t stain easily.

Polyester:  Polyester offers exceptional softness and color clarity, and it is also naturally stain and fade resistant. While polyester is not as inherently resilient as nylon, carpets made of polyester fiber will perform well if appropriately constructed. Thanks to technological advances in yarn processing and improved carpet construction techniques, polyester’s purported weakness as a high-performance fiber has been largely overcome. When properly twisted and tufted, today’s polyester yarns perform much better than in years past.

Polyester styles are good choices for low – to medium – traffic settings such as bedrooms. Polyester carpet styles typically represent good value.

Polypropylene also called Olefin: It’s a low pile carpet that is best used for damp areas from pool changing areas to basements to patios. It dries quickly after getting wet, it naturally repels stains and doesn’t fade easily. But it doesn’t do well with oily messes. There are fewer color choices with this fiber than with the others but we are sure you will find one that you like.

Natural Fibers:  It comes in a variety of options – “wool, sisal, jute & sea grass”.  It is great to your environment and floor. Wool is probably the most traditional favorite and offers a deep rich look and feel. It has excellent resilience and durability. Sisal, jute and sea grass are usually used as area rugs but they can be difficult to clean and rougher to the touch.

Blends: Blended carpet fibers are made from a few different combinations.   We primarily display carpets with an olefin and a wool blend.  With the olefin blend, a nylon fiber is added to give more color options.  In the wool blend, the manufacturer adds the synthetic fiber to reduce the cost without compromising the style.
